Why do we need to do this

Google believes that a large number of different websites linking to your website is a high quality ranking signal.

What does this mean

Google give a significant boost in rankings to sites that have a large number of links. Google does not however believe all links are equal and gives a much greater weight to links from different websites. For example 100 links from http://www.hotelconsultant.com would have less value that 1 link from 100 different websites.

What do I do: In order to find out the total number of backlinks and the number of root domains (different websites) with links to your site, click on https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/ and do the following:

You will then get the following page.

Now do this for all your competitors. If they are ahead of you on root domains start a link building strategy targeting different websites for links.
